Happy Monday as Nicola Bean achieves Science Council registration

Nicola Bean RSciTech MAAPT talks to the AAPT after achieiving the RSciTech award through the shortened route

You must be very proud to achieve the RSciTech award through the new shortened application process. Did you find applying straightforward?

I am very proud to achieve the RSciTech award. I found the process extremely straightforward with lots of resources if I needed the help. I worked through with the same mindset as my Level 3 Diploma portfolio and found the process relatively easy.

Can you give your main reason for wishing to achieve the RSciTech registration?

I had always aimed to apply for the RSciTech award since the beginning of my career as an APT. The main two reasons for my application were:

Firstly, I wish to register for the RSPH Level 4 diploma, and this is now a requirement in doing so, and secondly to focus on my professional development as an APT and continue to gain knowledge and experience. This award is an important step in working towards our profession being registered!

The AAPT provided guidance documents and other useful references within the AAPT website. Did you find these useful as you completed the application?

I found the resources provided by the AAPT to be a great source of guidance; Christian was also available to help with any queries I had.

Once the award is achieved it must then be maintained through CPD and adherence to the standards. Is this daunting or a new professional challenge to overcome?

Recording CPD is something I have needed to get into the habit of, not reflecting when I should have done. Now, with the RSciTech award it gives me the extra ‘push’ to continue to do so.

Any good examples of meeting a standard you used that you could share with others?

For me, the use of the different systems for recording information and how these (e.g. Eden) help each team we work with, whether this be Bereavement, Medical Examiners and the rest of my team in the mortuary.

Having these available to us ensures full traceability and helps us work together caring for the deceased patients and their families, these resources really do provide the best care possible.
