AAPT Launches Updated Guidance on Working with Deceased Friends, Family and Colleagues

We are pleased to announce the publication of updated guidance to support Anatomical Pathology Technologists (APTs) and mortuary teams when caring for a deceased person known to them.

This revised document reflects the realities of modern mortuary practice and reinforces the importance of professionalism, transparency, and staff wellbeing in what can be a uniquely challenging situation.

Key highlights of the updated guidance include:

  • Clear expectations around early disclosure and transparent decision-making when a personal connection is identified

  • A strengthened focus on staff wellbeing, autonomy, and access to support

  • Practical guidance on risk assessment and appropriate involvement in care processes

  • Reinforcement of legal, ethical, and organisational responsibilities

This guidance recognises the unique position of APTs and mortuary staff, and aims to support safe, respectful, and compassionate practice for both the deceased and those caring for them.
