Undertaking a Science Council Continuing Professional Development (CPD) review can feel daunting, especially for first time AAPT registrants
However, it is also an excellent opportunity to reflect on your professional development, celebrate your achievements and identify areas for future growth.
Following his recent successful Chartered Scientist (CSci) CPD review, AAPT Council member Frazer Rowlings-Ward CSci FAAPT kindly shared his thoughts on the experience. We spoke to Frazer about the review process, the support available, using CPDMe, and what advice he would offer to others who may be selected for a future CPD review.
His reflections demonstrate that CPD review is not about 'catching people out', but about showcasing the impact of your learning and continually developing your professional practice.
Before commencing the CPD review, I approached the process with a degree of uncertainty, particularly regarding the level of detail and depth of reflection expected. However, once I began, the structure and clarity of the requirements made the experience more straightforward than anticipated.
The emphasis on reflective practice provided a clear framework, and any initial concerns were quickly alleviated as the process proved to be both logical and manageable. This experience has helped demystify future reviews and increased my confidence in engaging with the CPD requirements.
The guidance provided by the AAPT and the Science Council was highly beneficial in preparing my submission. The examples illustrating effective reflection were particularly valuable, as they clarified the distinction between simply documenting activities and demonstrating their professional impact. The alignment of CPD expectations with professional standards also helped me structure my submission appropriately.
Overall, the resources available were comprehensive and supportive, and they contributed significantly to my understanding of what constitutes high?quality CPD evidence.
CPDMe proved to be an efficient and intuitive platform for maintaining my CPD portfolio. The ability to organise entries, upload evidence, and track activities throughout the year made the review process considerably smoother.
The platform encourages ongoing engagement rather than retrospective reconstruction, which supports more meaningful and timely reflection. I would recommend CPDMe to other registrants, as maintaining a well?structured portfolio throughout the year greatly reduces pressure during the review period and enhances the overall quality of CPD submissions.
The assessment feedback reinforced the importance of demonstrating impact and articulating how CPD activities have influenced my professional practice. I learned that high?quality CPD evidence requires more than a description of participation; it requires thoughtful reflection on outcomes, changes in practice, and benefits to colleagues, learners, or the wider organisation. In future, I will ensure that each CPD entry includes explicit reflection on learning gained and its practical application. This will help me produce a more robust and meaningful record of professional development.
My advice to fellow AAPT members is to maintain their CPD records consistently throughout the year and to approach the review as an opportunity for professional growth rather than a compliance exercise.
Focus on articulating the impact of each activity—how it has shaped your practice, enhanced your skills, or supported others. Make full use of the guidance provided, and remember that reviewers are looking for thoughtful reflection rather than volume of activity. A well-maintained portfolio and clear, reflective commentary will ensure a smooth and constructive review experience.
