As you know, the UK public honours system provides a visible and long lasting acknowledgement of the contribution that public servants and others make to local communities and society at large. It is important that we make the time to recognise the great contribution of the healthcare science workforce in the honours system and we're asking for your help to put forward more NHS staff for that special recognition.

Nominations should recognised those people who have a track record of 'making a difference' at the cutting edge of scientific practice and are recognised by their peers for such dedication. We are also looking to increase the numbers of nominations for women and for staff from black and minority ethnic groups.

Please also give special consideration to colleagues who are close to leaving the service. However, please remember that you can nominate someone at any time and do not have to wait until someone is retiring or stepping down from post. A good time to nominate would be when someone has made a significant achievement or a considerable impact that their colleagues will still recognise in, say, a year’s time when the Honour comes through.

Please do everything you can to identify candidates who meet these requirements particularly within the higher levels of awards – OBE/CBE/K&DBE. It is imperative to ensure anyone being nominated for an award is unaware. Please note, nominations can come from individuals or organisations and may be resubmitted for individuals nominated previously, but not successful; if you still feel they should be considered.

I attach a guidance note, which sets out the type of nomination we are seeking, together with advice on completing citations and criteria for healthcare scientists’ nominations. It would be greatly appreciated if this letter and its attachments could be cascaded as appropriate.

All nominations should be submitted electronically to Patricia Saunders and Mary Stamp (email: patricia.saunders@dh.gsi.gov.ukmary.stamp@dh.gsi.gov.uk) by Friday 24th August 2012.

Thank you for your help in promoting nominations for healthcare scientists. Should you have any queries then please contact my office.
