Ruth Abdellah achieves the RSciTech award

Congratulations to Ruth Abdellah RSciTech MAAPT who applied via the Science Council Common Application Process (CAP)

Ruth answered a few questions about her experience and encouragement to others to make an application.

How did you demonstrate the required competencies (e.g., problem-solving, safety, communication)?

In the past 12 months both our Mortuary sites have undergone significant changes-one of which was switching over to Eden. This change was enormous and meant that we had to demonstrate a lot of time and patience with ourselves and each other whilst getting used to it and essentially ditching the old & deeply engrained paperwork ways.  I managed to use a lot of my experience with the switchover to Eden for my evidence in my application- particularly when it came to discussing problem solving and communication.

What motivated you to pursue the RSciTech registration?

I was initially interested after I noticed that APT’s wanting to enrol for the Level 4 course now had to complete the AAPT shortened route for the RSciTech before they could sign up. I had already completed the level 4 before this rule became mandatory and it made me think prehaps there may come a time that all qualified APT’s would need to be Science Council Registered to either continue or progress in their careers- I had the time to focus on it, so I got it done.

How did the AAPT support you during the application process?

I had an MS Teams meeting with two APT’s who had successfully completed their Science Council Applications and were now registered- both were extremely helpful and shared their experiences with me, they also passed on their knowledge of what criteria the council would and wouldn’t be interested in which helped me build ideas of how to fill out my application. This was all done in their own time and it was greatly appreciated.

Which part of the application was the most challenging and how did you address it?

The most challenging parts for me were trying to restructure some of the criteria in the application to apply to the Mortuary as opposed to a Laboratory but I did seek out help from my line manager to get her thoughts on what was being asked- a fresh pair of eyes and her experienced perspective helped me figure out loads of Mortuary based alternatives to the difficult questions.
