Congratulations to Wynnona who applied through the RSciTech shortened route with the AAPT
Wynonna took time out to answer some questions on her Science Council achievement and to support others.
Did the RSciTech registration validate your skills in a way that prior qualifications or roles did not?
Having the RSciTech registration and the subsequent ability to have these letters after my name felt like validation I previously did not have as those who are not in my job field and friends and family alike tend not to understand what the Level 3 Healthcare Science Diploma is other than a certificate ‘from my job’.
I spent a lot of time and effort on the Level 3 and still asked, “what is that”, or “what does that mean”. However, I have found that although those same people do not understand what the RSciTech letters mean, they understand that a level of work must have gone in to obtaining that, similar to when a person obtains a degree and has letters added to their name from this. It has given me the validation and recognition that I felt the diploma deserved.
What motivated you to pursue RSciTech registration through AAPT’s shortened route?
My initial interest to pursue registration was due to future career goals of obtaining the Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science APT, and one of the entry requirements to enrol was registration with the Science Council.
I wanted to be able to go through the shortened route as I had last year, 2024, achieved the Level 3 Diploma and much of what is required in that diploma is what Science Council registration is looking for in their candidates for registered technicians. I put a lot of work into the Level 3 and I wanted to continue to use this as much as I could, and therefore if it could help me register for the RSciTech then I would do so. I also have the personal feeling that the APT role is drastically overlooked and misunderstood by those outside the profession, so being able to be a registered technician helps to validate the purpose of our role.
How do you plan to maintain your RSciTech status and continue developing professionally?
I endeavour to maintain my RSciTech by continuing to keep my CPD portfolio up to date with ongoing learning through webinars and additional training that is available to me. I continue to take on further responsibilities within courses I assist in teaching and assessing.
I will be next year, 2026, mentoring a trainee APT through their Level 3 diploma and I hope to take on training with further assessing responsibilities, all to keep my knowledge updated in my field. Further I hope to enrol on a Level 4 diploma in my field in 2027.
Were there any surprises or lessons learned during the process?
I did not expect the personalised feedback I received from the two assessors when I had not met a standard to the level expected.
I was pleasantly surprised to received feedback from both assessors commenting on what I had said and why it was not quite what they needed for the standard I was trying to reach. I was also provided with feedback in how to improve what I had said and what I could do to get my evidence to reach the required standard. I found this very useful as the suggestions made I could not do within the scope of my job role; however, this meant I knew to re-think and start again on that standard with a new evidence example and using their feedback on what the last needed to contain I incorporated that into my new evidence.
Once resubmitted this was accepted with no further issues.
