Senior Anatomical Pathology Technologist

Ipswich Hospital

You will be based at Ipswich Hospital, however you may be required on occasion to cover Colchester Hospital. You will lead a small team of technical staff providing post mortem services to HM Coroner on behalf of ESNEFT.

Reporting to the Mortuary and Bereavement Services Lead the post holder shall ensure day to day services are delivered to the highest standards. You shall participate in provision of the out of hour’s service to the Trust and HM Coroner.

You will be supported in the role by the Deputy Lead for Mortuary and Bereavement Services to use your skills to support the current team to develop the service in line with Human Tissue Authority requirements. Strategic Operational Lead for Mortuary & Bereavement Services

Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals

We are seeking an experienced and innovative leader to provide clinical, operational and strategic leadership across our Mortuary, Bereavement and Medical Examiner Services at Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals.

As the professional lead and Designated Individual named on the Trust’s Human Tissue Authority (HTA) Licences, you will ensure that all services operate in full compliance with HTA standards and codes of practice. You will lead a team dedicated to delivering safe, effective and compassionate care for deceased patients and support for the bereaved with dignity, respect and sensitivity at all times.

This is a key leadership role requiring a balance of strategic vision, operational excellence and professional expertise to continue to integrate and develop our services. You will be an engaging and collaborative leader, confident in managing diverse teams and skilled at building strong working relationships with external agencies including Coroner’s Services, Police, Funeral Directors and Local Authorities.

You will be a qualified Anatomical Pathology Technologist with a Level 4 Royal Society for Public Health Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (or equivalent), and bring significant experience of working within a complex mortuary environment.

Coroners and The County Mortuary Service Manager

This modern facility offers dignified spaces for families, including private viewing and identification areas, ensuring a respectful and supportive experience for those dealing with the loss of a loved one.

Bringing key services under one roof, the facility simplifies processes, reduces delays, and improves efficiency for families, funeral directors, healthcare professionals, and other essential services. It also features advanced post-mortem capabilities, including a CT scanner for remote examination, setting a new standard in service delivery.

What will you be doing?
In this pivotal role, you will oversee both the Coroners Service and the County Mortuary, ensuring they operate to the highest professional and regulatory standards. You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team, manage complex service operations, and act as the Designated Individual under the Human Tissue Authority.

You’ll be responsible for ensuring compassionate care for bereaved families, while also driving service improvements, regulatory compliance, and emergency preparedness. Working closely with partners such as the NHS, Police, and Funeral Directors, you’ll help shape a service that is both efficient and empathetic.

Anatomical Pathology Technologist

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

To provide a professional, proactive and sensitive service to bereaved relatives, whilst ensuring the Trust’s statutory obligations are fulfilled.  To take part in continuously review practice and develop policies which incorporate national guidance and Human Tissue Authority Legislation.  To work closely with other key professionals both within and outside the Trust in order to meet individual needs.  To promote an awareness of bereavement issue within a multi faith, multi-cultural environment.

The post holder will work in parallel with the Bereavement Services and work alongside the other pathology departments to provide a service. There will be interaction and occasional cross site working with the sister service at the Princess Royal Site.
